What is Ferritin?
Ferritin is a blood protein that stores and releases iron within the body. It therefore indirectly provides an indication of iron levels. Iron deficiency can cause several health issues including anaemia. Low ferritin may also indicate hypothyroidism, vitamin C deficiency or coeliac disease.
The test can be used at anytime of the day. It’s advisable to test following the onset of symptoms such as extreme fatigue, paleness, headaches, faster heartbeat or shortness of breath. Do not use if infection or inflammation is present, levels can be normal even when iron deficiency is present. Also, ferritin levels may be less reliable during pregnancy.
